#11: The Imagination Station

#10: Someone To Watch Over Me: It's just, in general, a classic staple of the brilliance of early AIO.  It combines action, heart, spirituality, and a constant sense of adventure in a mind-boggling melting pot of beauty.  It's my favorite Jimmy episode of all time and I think many would agree it deserves to be here.

#9: Do Or Diet: This may come as a shock to some, as "Do Or Diet" seems to be a very minor episode at first.  It's a simple comedy with a simple plot and few characters.  It's mismashed with all the other episodes from that season, and it's not built to stand out.  But it achieves its purpose (to entertain and amuse) far better than any comedy AIO has ever produced.  It's Kathy Werienga's crown jewel as a writer, and it deserves the Top 10.

#8: Connie: Fairly self-explanatory, I suppose.  Connie had only been around Odyssey for about a year at this time, but her conversion is extremely powerful nonetheless, and the flashback scenes are done extremely well.  But who can forget Eugene's appearance in the episode as well?  Strangely enough, my favorite scene of the episode is Eugene's entrance into Whit's End.

#7: The Green Ring Conspiracy: This is probably the most shocking placement of all (except maybe the #1), but I wholeheartedly believe it's a masterpiece, just like Darkness Before Dawn and Novacom.  Except there's one difference: DBD and Novacom weren't all one episode.  GRC is.  If it was split into different episodes, do you think I would place any of them this high?  Heck, no.  But when looked at as a complete package, GRC is a truly fascinating web of intrigue and suspense.  Almost like a psychological thriller in that it has no action, but manages to seem suspenseful the entire time.

#6: The Case of the Secret Room: Again, pretty self-explanatory.  It's the first true AIO mystery, and easily the best.  The story itself is well known to all AIO fans, and there are enough twists and turns to keep first-time listeners guessing.  But, of course, the greatest line of the show is one word: "Whitake-rrr".

#5: The Final Conflict: This deserves to be here because of the tunnel scene with Blackgaard and Jack alone.  Probably in the top 3 scenes of all time.  I also love how they picked off each villain before it was just Blackgaard left.  The highlight of the DBD saga, and the 2nd best episode of the album.

#4: The Forgotten Deed: This'll come as a shocker as well, but I think it's a fantastic summary of everything Odyssey is, and, if the show were to ever end, it would be an even more fantastic ending episode.  The last scene still gives me goosebumps.  Overall, this deserves the #4 spot, and it's a rare work of art among the modern episodes (though I did say Album 50 was the greatest of all time).

#3: The Mortal Coil: Conceivably the most beautiful and complex episode in the entire AIO canon, this is a true tour de force of a drama, and a definite candidate for #1.  Walker Edminston's performance throughout the entire episode is amazing, and the subplot with Eugene is chilling yet beautiful.  Definitely #3 material.

#2: The Time Has Come: Another self-explanatory Top 10, though many of you are probably surprised it is not #1, and, if you didn't already see it, wondering what the heck #1 could be.  There isn't much to be said about "The Time Has Come" that hasn't been said already: it's the most powerful episode of all time.  But not the most inspirational.  That honor will be reserved for #1...

#1: Malachi’s Message: Every time I listen to this episode, I'm inspired to do something.  It will always set off a trigger that springs me to action. There's a transcendence about it: an angel visiting Odyssey.  It's the one of the only times when something supernatural occurs in the town, and it's written expertly by Paul McCusker.  The actor who plays Malachi (I forget his name, but I'm aware he's on Radio Theatre) is easily the greatest one-time actor the show has ever had.  The scenes with all the major characters in one room are not meant to be dramatic and powerful, but just hearing Whit, Connie, Eugene, Tom, Jack, Joanne, and Jason all in the same room is among the most powerful things AIO has ever done.  This is a beautifully mysterious, and mysteriously beautiful episode, and it is arguably the only genuine work of art AIO has ever produced.  This isn't to say it's the only great episode they've ever produced, but it's the only one that has crossed the line between entertaining life lessons and true art.

Well, that's it.  If you read this post, please comment, because I really feel it's the biggest post I've ever made on this blog, and I'd like to hear all my readers' (if I even have any anymore) thoughts on this list.  I'm willing to edit it if you convince me I should, and I'd love to just get a second opinion.
     Thanks for reading!

Weekly Feature 3/24/13

Yup, yup, the weekly feature's back.  I'm beginning to see it was a mistake to limit myself to just news and reviews, so I'm bringing both the Weekly Feature and the AIO Article back from extinction.
Today I will be giving you the "Top 5 Worst AIO Characters of All Time".  The only stipulation I have for the characters is that they have to have appeared in more than one episode (one-time characters don't count as "characters" in my book).  Enjoy...

#5: Mary Hopkins -- This name might come across as a bit of a surprise, but I've always considered Miss Hopkins one of the driest AIO characters in the show's history.  She came in as the owner of "Mary's Story Shop" and preceded to become Whit's new "boss" as the one overseeing the construction of the new Whit's End Connellsville.  This lady had almost no distinct qualities or traits about her: she was an old lady, almost always whining about another problem that Whit's End Connellsville faced.  Fans had to put up with her for 6 episodes (4 of them from the Danger Signals album, which was almost completely spoiled by her presence, along with the episode "Snow Day") and, though not everyone disliked her, she has often been cited as a weak character.

#4: Cody Carper: I don't really know what it was about this kid, but something always got on my nerves.  He just seemed so... boring.  Once again, there was nothing special that stood out to me about him.  Basically, he popped up out of nowhere (like all the other kids on AIO back then) in "The Pushover".
That episode is often cited as a low point in Marshall Younger's usually excellent writing skills, and Cody's appearance was one of the main reasons why it is panned.  Also, no offense to Dave Arnold's son Landon, but I never thought they got a very good actor to play this already dreadful character.  In my opinion, Landon did a better job as Scrub, another relatively weak character.  Thankfully, Cody's life on AIO was a short one, but I cringe every time I hear his voice come up again.

#3: Heather (whatever her last name is): Ugh... I don't think there's a single good thing about this character.  She's extremely inconsistent, openly obnoxious, and just bad on multiple levels.  If you're wondering what I mean by "inconsistent", I shall tell you.  I don't know if it's just her hormones, but Heather seems to have drastic personality changes.  In "Poor Loser" and "A Lesson From Mike", she comes across as a whiny, if well-meaning, pre-teen girl.  In "More Like Alicia", she acts like an unpopular yet kind, insecure person.  In "You Win Some, You Lose Some", she's simply a bully.  Finally, in "Chores No More", she's an organized, determined leader who doesn't always have the greatest ideas.  For a character who was only in 5 episodes, that's a lot of personalities.  I could go on about her voice and her shallowness as a character, but that's enough for now.

     #2: Valerie Swanson:
 Valerieswanson.jpg
Possibly the most shallow AIO character of all time, (well, maybe Rodney beats her, but at least he was funny) Valerie is almost universally disliked by AIO fans.  On message boards, people like T.S. (Myself) are vocal Valerie haters, and I agree with them.  Valerie has never shown anything special that previous bullies like Rodney didn't have, except good looks.  She has often played "the bad guy" in the story, and, generally, the listener is supposed to want the good guy to win and the bad guy to lose.  Instead, however, in Valerie episodes, I simply want the bad guy to leave Odyssey forever and I don't care if the good guy wins or not.  She also possibly has more cringe-worthy lines than any other AIO character, and her presence has poisoned many episodes, such as "You're Two Kind" and "Anger Mismanagement".

#1: Edith Sutton: Hahaha, yes.  I know many people are going to disagree with me on this, but I do have a couple reasons for my decision.  I don't actually believe Miss Sutton would've been such a terrible character if she had had a crush on anyone else but Whit.  Because Whit is the soul of the show: the main character, the ultimate asset, the Cat in the Hat of AIO, and Connie and Eugene are Sally and Conrad.  So, having some old lady come in and try to steal this beloved character's heart (though she does fail at it) is infuriating to any AIO fan.  Many have overlooked this character because she only appeared in two episodes, but she still should always be remembered as a mistake on AIO's part.  I have never found "Edith" to be amusing, and I hope that most true fans wouldn't find her amusing either.  Almost everything about her, from her voice to her behavior, is obnoxious and flawed.  The concept of her character is too ridiculous for AIO, and all the scenes she was in were very awkward for me.  Her role in "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow" was thankfully only a small one, but it still put a damper on the episode.  And in "Broken-Armed and Dangerous", she was completely unnecessary, only there because the writers wanted her to be.  Every time she came on the scene, I just wanted her to go away.  And that's the sign of a bad character.

Well, that's it.  I actually have no doubt you disagree with me, but... I have my reasons.  I hope you enjoyed that feature, and I look forward to writing another one!  Until next time, I'm Alex Jefferson telling you to be on the lookout for more JAAIOB posts!  (And possibly more AICs)
     Thanks for reading!

Weekly Feature 12/2/12

This isn't really a feature, more like a massive news segment giving a preview of what we'll be doing at JAAIOB for the next couple months in what I would like to call, "JAAIOB'S Big Epic Revival".  I'm actually going to try to get back to blogging at least every other day, so expect more frequent posts. Anyway, here's the news...

The first big thing I have planned is JAAIOB's 16 Days of Christmas.  On ABC, they have a 25 Days of Christmas thing where they play Christmas movies in stuff, so that's kind of my inspiration.  But this will be much bigger than Christmas movies.  Each day will be a very special post or article involving AIO, God, and the Christmas season in general.  I'll try not to make them all long articles, as that's not what the Christmas season is about, of course.  This will be JAAIOB's biggest event since the "big surprise" a while back.  I am also going to hope to get Wooton Bassett to design a great logo for the event, but no promises.  The event will start on December 9th, so in one week, and it will last till December 24th, where all the stuff we've done for the past 16 days will come together with one epic Christmas finale.  I'm also hoping to get a Christmas podcast during this time as one of the 16 things for this Christmas, so JAAIOP listeners can get excited.

The next thing I have planned, almost as big as the 16 Days of Christmas, is something similar to the Websters that I like to call The AJ Awards.  (AJ stands for "Alex Jefferson". I know, I'm conceited.)  These will be like the Avery awards, except more in-depth.  I will not have fans vote on these like I do with the Websters, but instead I will choose the awards myself.  The categories will include Best Screenplay: Comedy, Best Screenplay: Drama/Action-Adventure, Best Overall Episode, Best Supporting Actor/Actress, Best Leading Actor, Best Leading Actress, Best Sound Effects, Best Music, and a few more!  I will hold these soon after Album 56 is done airing, so probably in early January.  I don't want to hold the award ceremony (which will be a little less glamorous than the Websters) during the 16 Days of Christmas, as it doesn't pertain to the Christmas season.  But this will still be a very exciting event for JAAIOB.

I'm also planning a change in the podcast for Episode 4, after the Christmas Special.  I would like to get actual guests for The AIO Show at least, probably AIO fans at first, but then I might move into AIO cast and crew if the podcast becomes popular.  I'm not planning on releasing Episode 4 till February, so I don't need to start searching for guests for another month or so.

The U.S.S. Response will be making a return as well in the near future, (probably in either January or February) but it will be different.  I've been thinking of possibly making a CC Response (Campbell County) or maybe even a ToO Response (Town of Odyssey).  However, I can only do all three if I have help with at least one of them.  So if any of you SSers would like to submit an occasional Response, I would love to have your help.  If no one would be willing to do this, I shall not add a CC Response or ToO Response.  However, I would still understand if you couldn't help...

The Webster Awards will also be making a return pretty soon, probably in April.  I need to get a lot of things organized, and since this ceremony is so far away, I'm not revealing the nominees till January.  I will have a better and more clear voting system this time, and I will try to get more audio speeches.  It will be much bigger and better than last year, so expect the unexpected.

As a final sidenote, I realize I missed AIO's 25th Anniversary.  But in truth, I didn't.  The "big article" I told you about in an earlier post will be a lengthy celebration of AIO in honor of its 25th Anniversary.  This will be a little late, coming out in January or February, but I have not doubt you will all enjoy it.

So, for the next week, I'll be preparing for all of these things.  Therefore, you probably won't hear from me again until next Sunday when the epic 16 Days of Christmas starts.  But I felt I should just reveal to you some of my future plans.  Until then, I'm Alex Jefferson, and this is... JAAIOB News!  (JAAIOB News will not be a regular thing, I just had so many plans in the works, I thought I could load them all into one feature.)
     Thanks for reading!

Weekly Feature 11/11/12

Well, I realize I haven't had an interview for a while, but that's all about to change, as I have an interview with Josh and Ally from Out of Control In Odyssey right here. Here it is:

1. I think all readers of your blog know how you were first exposed to Odyssey. But when did Ally start listening?

Ally: Hmmm...well, I've gotta say I started listening when my brother first listened! But of course I was very young and actually not really into it. It didn't really draw me in yet. I'd say, when we went to Colorado Springs, that was when I really became more into it, listening and becoming an AIO lover.

2. How did you first get involved in the AIO online community?

Josh: Well, I knew at first that there was the Official Site, but one day I must have stumbled around on Google and found the Odyssey Scoop! I later found AIO Wiki, Christian A.'s The Voice of Odyssey, and several other blogs. This year, it's been really cool to find a cache of brand new, exciting, original sites that rivals the number when I first started looking!

Ally: Once again, it was Josh who persuaded me to help him do an Odyssey blog. I wasn't really in any online communities before then though.

3. What was your inspiration for Odyssey Nerd?

Josh: Honestly, when I first listened to the Ceiling Fan, I had just started to listen to Odyssey, so I didn't get a lot of the jokes and was like, "What is this?" A couple years later, I relistened to it and realized its awesomeness, and so I kept on listening! We tried out for the Fan Hijack to create your own podcast, but we weren't as prepared, so when the next year came with a new contest to "hijack," we wanted to be ready! My idea was to do some kind of song about how I use AIO phrases in real life, similar to how Star Trek fans say, "Beam me up..." and started out with "I'm an Odyssey nerd, Israel's Jason's codeword"...and we went from there!

Ally: Josh came up with a song about an Odyssey Nerd, because Ethan Daniels, the main character for TCF, says that he is. Also because we both know so much about Odyssey!

4. Why did you decide to start a blog?

Josh: I've always had that little idea in the back of my head, but I wasn't really inspired until I met the actors and fans at the live show. I was on an Odyssey high after we left, and the conversation went like this:

Ally, we should totally start an Odyssey blog!
Okay.

I wanted to pick up where At Whit's End left off and try to review every single episode, but add my own experiences and knowledge about storytelling. I also wanted to continue my Odyssey Nerd message about using Odyssey references in daily conversation!

Ally: After the AMAZING, awesome time with the Odyssey actors and fans in Dallas, we were so inspired to do something Odyssey related. Josh had been online looking at other Odyssey blogs and with our previous experiences with blogs, so we decided to go for it!

5. Were you surprised at the extreme success of Out of Control In Odyssey? (Such as your acceptance of two Websters)

Josh: The whole experience of OCO has been amazing. We've been excited and blessed by everyone who has visited and commented on our blog! What we did was to try and fill a niche that wasn't being filled, and we're glad that people have enjoyed that niche, and that we can continue to provide that!

Ally: I was for sure! I thought it wouldn't reach a lot of people with such a small blog, but as time progressed I saw how our blog had impacted on others. But at the same time I wasn't, because I knew God had plans for this blog, and well I knew our blog would do okay haha. For sure I was surprised and honored to be nominated!! I never expected it and it was just, wow, it was just all God, man.

6. What do you plan on doing with Out of Control In Odyssey in the future?

Josh: We don't have any new plans with the blog - that should continue, and we'll update the Odyssey Phone Book. We are coming up with new features for the overall website, though!

Ally: THIS ANSWER HAS BEEN ERASED BY THE EDITOR.

7. Are you planning any other AIO-related or non-related projects in the future?

Josh: We have several big projects that we're hard at work on - one of which we're hoping to get out before the end of the year on the blog (I'm really excited about it!). I'm trying to get a certain AIO actor for my radio show (if you're interested, visit my blog for more information)! Also for radio, I'm working with the Future Leaders Institute to develop a short film and film festival to bring attention to the sanctity of life: rape, abortion, and adoption. I'd love your help, if you're interested!

Ally: If I have time, maybe draw some scenes from AIO episodes, but other than the BLANK, I think...right now: not too much. We don't wanna make too many promises and projects that busy us too much for us not to live our out of odyssey lives. Sadly, I wish we could have some more.

8. Who is your favorite AIO character?

Josh: My favorites are Paul Herlinger's Whit, Connie, and Bernard. I loved his grandfatherly warmth that he brought to the role, and it made Odyssey a very, very special place for me. Connie is a very relatable character, and Bernard is definitely one of the funniest people on the show. I miss you Dave Madden!

Ally: I actually got a lot. And I will be writing a post about that sometime in the near future! but if I had to choose, Bernard Walton. Sarcastic, funny, loves God, likes to be clean, adventurous, who doesn't like him? Plus he's played by Dave Madden, who's extremely talented!

9. What are some of your favorite AIO episodes?

Josh: There are so many! However, I do have some top eps. My favorite comedy is "Broken Window," my favorite action one is "Exit," my favorite biblical one is "The Perfect Church," and my favorite mystery is "The Pact." I love how Odyssey can continue to bring us quality, faith-affirming, GOOD stories year after year, with great writing. True, sometimes there are rough spots, but Odyssey never fails to make me light up.

Ally: Eugene Returns (about prayer), Malachi's Message (angels), Broken Window, Gloobers, I got a lot haha.

10. If you could have any AIO character return, who would it be and why?

Josh: Hmm...great question. When you say "return," I'm gonna assume you mean from before the relaunch, so my answers are Bernard and Jack! Sadly, I hear that Alan Young is in poor health, but if he recovers, I would love to hear him one last time (and record the openers and closers for all of the Passages series just in case) in Odyssey with Joanne. Dave Madden lives in Florida, so it's tough for him to make it to recording sessions, but I hope that he'll be able to! I really love them because they're two pillars of the show; they move the show forward, they're markers of where the show has come from, and they're part of Odyssey! I feel that Odyssey has seemingly lost a lot of that older generational wisdom - Whit may be wise, but he can't do it all by himself.

Ally: BERNARD, definitely. He just made the show funnier, the way he interacts with the kids and adults with a somewhat sarcasm. Or Tom I wish. ); Tom and Bernard were great together, I loved the way they interacted with each other; great times I'd love to have that again!

11. Have you ever personally met any AIO actors/crew?

Josh: I had the opportunity to meet everyone at the live show, which was truly a remarkable experience. It definitely ranks as one of my top memories. They're all so nice and so personable, and it was a honor to meet them.

Ally: Yes! Nathan Hoobler was our tour guide at Focus on the Family in 2007, we met all the actors at Dallas (Katie Leigh was soo sweet, Chris bubbly as ever). Man, I wish I could meet them all again, plus more of the actors!

12. How has AIO impacted your spiritual life?

Josh: Oh my. I'm really similar to Katie Leigh in the fact that God uses these stories to speak to me. Most recently, this year, I'm a junior, and I'm often worried about what God wants to do with my life and what I should major in..."Great Expectations" spoke to me about how God uses our goals and dreams for his purposes, and to leave it up to Him. But many episodes have been listened to just at the right time, and hey, God has a funny sense of humor about doing that.

Ally: Hearing the characters stories, the way they portray it, say it, make it feel, it just brings me all back to God. Their lessons are so great, and what I think helps is that (even though I like happy endings way better), they show how times of sorrows approach and how the characters feel. Sometimes it's like God's way of saying "See Ally, this character didn't trust in me when he/she could've. You CAN trust me" I feel that I wouldn't be the same person if I didn't listen to AIO. AIO showed me God's worked in our lives in so many ways, and the great adventure isn't over yet.

I do hope you enjoyed that! I would like to thank Josh and Ally for agreeing to do this and giving such long, great answers! I wish I could tell you I have an AIC out, but... I don't. However, it should be out next week! There's a big surprise in Installment 12 that you don't want to miss. Whoops... I've said too much already. ;)
     Thanks for reading!

Weekly Feature 9/16/12

Sorry I didn't get this feature out for a while, but I have a truly awesome excuse. I've been listening to Odyssey! That's right! For just about the entire day, I've been indulging in the clean, hilarious, character-building entertainment that this amazing show offers! I just got a boatload of albums for my birthday yesterday, so I listened to some episodes I had actually never heard before (in Album 8), as well as revisiting the captivating Novacom Saga in Volume 38 and chuckling at all the unfortunate missteps in Album 51. (Including the character of Emily) But I also had time to record a podcast today. I'll have it out for you soon, though I'm afraid not tonight. I also am starting to get a guilty conscience about AIC, but I just can't bring myself to sit down and write it. I've had a busy weekend, though, it all seemed to fly by in just a couple of hours, what with my birthday party, listening to Odyssey, and recording a podcast. And after listening to the epic Novacom saga for hours, I simply had to do a feature on sagas! So here it is, my take on the Top 5 Best Saga Episodes:

     5.   The Top Floor: In Nathan Hoobler's interview with me, he said this was the best episode that he had written. I wouldn't go that far, but it still deserves a spot on this list. Why? Quite simply, because it's great! The African scenes, the intensity of it all, Eugene's conversations with his Dad, the shocking revelation that Everret is alive, and the ending are all well-done. It is easily the best Eugene Searching For His Father episode and, in my opinion, is better than several Novacom and Blackgaard episodes. It's a true action-adventure masterpiece, and I love it! But the epic ep. that beat it is...

     4. 38front.jpg Box of Miracles: Yes. Yes, I'm sure this is a bit of a surprise. You were probably thinking "Exit!" But I honestly think that the last three Novacom episodes were a little rushed, and the saga could've been given another several episodes to really develop. But Box of Miracles is a perfect example of an ideal Novacom episode: it's intense, chilling, it references God without being cliche about it, and it reveals more of the plot without seeming rushed. I love the idea of Tom and Whit butting heads about Novacom, and Bryan Dern and Arthur Dent just made this episode great. The acting was superb, the writing was perfect, and it set the stage for the last 5 episodes in an entertaining and satisfying way. I say it is one of the best Novacom episodes and it certainly exceeds Expect the Worst, Exactly As Planned, and even Exit. But it's not the best...

     3. 05front.jpg The Battle: Ah yes, the Blackgaard episodes will always come late in the list. And while The Nemesis was good, I think The Battle is better. It certainly exceeded fan's expectations and got far bigger and more intense than anyone thought Odyssey could at the times. Blackgaard and Maxwell are ideal villians, and Lucy's conversation with Richard int eh hospital was fascinating. I just love this episode, it's a true example of a great, classic AIO episode of an era from days gone by. So what other saga episode got on the list?

     2. 25front.jpg The Final Conflict: DBD always seems to finish in 2nd place in my lists. I am a big fan of Blackgaard, but I can't honestly say that The Final Conflict was the best saga episode ever. However, it was a mind-blowing conclusion that blew all previous saga episodes out of the water and set the standard for future saga endings. The way they picked off the villians one by one before it was just Blackgaard always excites me. The entire saga just makes me want to jump up and down with excitement. And, the winner is...

     1. 37front.jpg Plan B: Collision Course: I'm just a sucker for this episode. I really am. There is no way I wouldn't give it first on a list like this. It's more exciting than any other episode in Odyssey history, (yes, that's a bold statement, but I believe it's true) and the way it was a ll sewn together to make way for the ending was great. It was unpredictable at every turn, and Arthur Dent put on another stellar, mad-man performance. Mr. Charles was just plain epic, and the emotion, intensity, and occasional comedy with the brilliant David Griffin all just came together to make the episode that is by a shadow of a doubt the best saga episode ever.

(Note: If you're wondering about The Time Has Come, I don't consider it a Blackgaard episode, and this list was for action-adventure sagas only.)

I hope you enjoyed that, cause I sure enjoyed writing it! I love these little lists, and I haven't done one in a while. I'll try to post more often, so you guys can get your daily dose of JAAIOB. And don't worry, the podcast should be out tomorrow.
     Thanks for reading!

Weekly Feature 8/19/12

Alright, everyone, for today's feature I have another really special treat for you! I had the amazing oppurtunity to interview none other than Nathan Hoobler! That's right! It's really a great interview, so I hope you guys like it. Also, for the first time in two weeks, there's a new AIC out!

1. When did you first start listening to AIO?

I started listening in 1988. I'm not sure of the first episode that I listened to, but I distinctly remember having to wait to hear the second half of "Camp What-a-Nut."

2. What drove you to start AIOHQ?

I had been working on the school website in the public relations office at my college. I thought that it would be fun to take those web building tools and create an Odyssey website. I wish there was some great purpose or master plan, but really, I just thought it would be fun. It was a lot of work, but fun work, too. And the interaction with other fans was certainly worth it.

3. What was it like being an intern for Odyssey?

It was fantastic. Not only was I working for Odyssey, I was working with the people whose names I had heard for years at the end of the program. I learned a lot about writing, production, and just working in general that summer. And it convinced me that this was what I wanted to do with my life.

4. Where did you get the idea for The Triangle?

The episode was Paul McCusker's idea. There's a line in "For Whom the Wedding Bells Toll" where Jack is talking about his friends stealing his girlfriends away. As an aside, he says, "How do you think Whit met Jenny." Paul thought that it would be fun to write an episode explaining the story behind that line.

5. What is your favorite AIO episode that you've written?

I'd probably say "The Top Floor." That was the most fun to figure out and work through all the details. But the episode that I still get the most comments about is "The Pact."

6. What is your favorite AIO episode that you haven't written?

For many years, I said, "Waylaid in the Windy City." While that's still a favorite, an episode like "Something Old, Something New" might top it now.

7. If you could have any AIO character return, who would it be and why?

Bernard Walton. Not only is he a perfect folly for Eugene, he can say things that no one else can get away with. And, of course, he has a heart of gold underneath all that complaining.

8. Which do you prefer: writing or directing?

I'd say that writing is more rewarding, but far more time-consuming. It takes weeks or months to get a show written and all of four hours to get it recorded. On the other hand, directing can be tremendous fun. Directing "The Top Floor" and "Something Old, Something New" were both high points for me.

9. I saw a picture of you drinking a Wod-Fam-Choc-Sod after recording Home Again. What was it like recording that episode?

I was there for the recording, but I wasn't directing. That was Paul McCusker. Like many shows with the main characters, there was a lot of laughing (and a little bit of chaos) in the studio. After recording, I did the voice-edit on the show, which took about a week. Voice editing really appeals to my linear mind so it was fun, especially on a show with so many of the main characters.

10. What episode are you working on currently? (You don't have to give away spoilers.)

We're working on episodes for albums 57 & 58 right now. Some of the shows may switch albums at this point. I'm not entirely certain what my next script will be.

11. What is your relationship with the Odyssey actors?

As you may have seen in bonus features or Facebook, the cast and crew are very much like a family. We enjoy spending time together and keeping up with each other. It's a blessing to work with people who you like so much.

12. How has AIO impacted your spiritual life?

It's influenced me in ways that I understand and probably a lot of ways I don't know about. Certainly much my knowledge of the Bible comes from hearing so many Odyssey shows through the years. There have been times in my life where I've asked the classic question: WWWD? What would Whit do?

Having to write words to put in Whit's, Connie's, and Eugene's mouths has also forced me to think very seriously about my own relationship with God. You can't write for characters who are supposed to be walking with God and be neglecting your own time with Him.

That was great, wasn't it? It's still amazing to me that through this little blog, I've been able to email Nathan Hoobler, the man I wrote an article about! That's it! Don't forget to check out the new AIC while you're here!
     Thanks for reading!

Weekly Feature 8/12/12

Alright, today I have an interview with someone who surprisingly has been interviewed only once! Who is that person? Jacob Isom, of course! Yes, I had the oppurtunity to interview Jacob Isom. This is a nice long interview that I think you all will really enjoy! So here it is:

1. What was your first exposure to AIO?

Technically, I saw my first Adventures in Odyssey animated cartoon with my cousin ("A Fine Feathered Frenzy"), though I don't think that counts because it's not the audio series.

I was first introduced to Adventures in Odyssey in, I believe, 1991 when I was six years old. I come from the original generation of Odyssey listeners and grew up with the show. My aunt gave me a cassette copy of "Terrific Tales, Mysterious Missions" as a Christmas gift. Meanwhile, my brother and sister both received their own AIO albums on cassette as well that same Christmas. My sister received "It's Another Fine Day" and my brother received "Other Times, Other Places." The first episode I ever heard is "The Ill-Gotten Deed", and when I heard it, my initial reaction was that "this show is weird". Fortunately, I decided to give more episodes a try. Needless to say, by the end of the album I was hooked. And since I had access to two more albums right off the bat, it's a given that my siblings and I swapped albums after they had similar positive experiences. After hearing three albums in a very short amount of time, I'm sure you can imagine how eager I was to obtain more albums.

Because I was new to the show, I assumed that getting "The Early Classics" would fill in all the details I'd missed by jumping right into the series. It didn't. To me, the album felt very discombobulated and random, and rightly so since the album was pieced together with out-of-order episodes after the series started. Thankfully, that has been corrected with the release of "The Adventure Begins."

I think I had collected all the available albums up through "Signed, Sealed & Committed" by 1998 or 1999. That was considered a complete collection in those days, and "Chronicles, Kings & Crosses" was that special coveted extra compilation album with the "cool" cover.

2. What was your inspiration for The Odyssey Scoop?

Primarily my love for Adventures in Odyssey spawned my desire to start my own fan site. I began working on The Odyssey Scoop during a time when it was difficult to obtain certain Adventures in Odyssey graphics, and the product images available at the time were very low quality. Fan sites were very few and far between. I don't remember this as 100% fact or anything (time has a way of doing that if you don't keep a journal), but I think I remember I had browsed through the AIO HQ, a fan site by Odyssey writer Nathan Hoobler, and The Soda Fountain by Corey van der Laan. Those two, along with the newly-released Official Site, inspired me to start a site of my own.

I launched the website on December 22, 2000 titled as "The Odyssey Scoop", which happened to share the name with a feature in Focus on the Family's Clubhouse magazine--though, I didn't know it at the time. Regardless, I stuck with the name because it was just too perfect not to use. Otherwise, our podcast down the road would never have had the chance to be called the "ScoopCast". A very fitting name, don't you think?

Regardless of the name, I'm thankful for the opportunities that have arisen since as I developed design skills for the past 12 years. I would probably cringe at my earlier work and disown it if given the chance. I guess that's why I'm never truly satisfied with one look to the site. What you see today is the result of persistence and not being willing to be content with the status quo.

3. Who is your favorite AIO character?

Probably Whit, mainly because I remember him there throughout my entire childhood. The performances of Hal Smith as "Whit" stand out as really powerful as I listened, and I looked up to him as a kid. My other favorites are Connie and Eugene for their personalities and Bernard for his sarcasm. Of course, Jason, Tom, Jack, and Joanne are my favorites as well.

4. If you could have any AIO character come back, who would it be and why?

If you're hoping I'd choose Regis Blackgaard or Richard Maxwell to return, you're turning to the wrong person. I'm glad the Blackgaard Saga has come and gone, and while Richard turned out to be a hero, there's not really a whole lot the team could do with him if they decided to bring him back. My choice would most likely be to bring back Jimmy Barclay as they have done in the past, but keep him in Odyssey to raise a family. Having Donna around wouldn't be a bad option, either, though they could probably bring her in from out of town occasionally. The same goes for Jana Whittaker. There was something real about Jana's presence in Odyssey on occasion and to be able to see her relationship with her father.

I am glad to see the Odyssey team is doing their best to bring in old faces for older listeners like me. It brings it all back!

5. What are your favorite AIO episodes?

Throughout my listening years, I've become attached to "Grins, Grabber and Great Getaways" (or "The Wildest Summer" as the team calls it now) because I received it the following Christmas and listened to it in that entire day Christmas Day. I remember "The Case of the Secret Room" scared me to death, and after I'd heard the first scene for the first time, I rushed downstairs and made my brother and sister come up and listen to the episodes with me. We rewinded the episode (and yes, we had to physically rewind back in the day) and played from the beginning.

Many of the older episodes were my favorites growing up because those were what I was exposed to. Nowadays, I'm always excited to see what developments are coming up in more recent albums for newer generations of fans. And as cynical as I find myself to be sometimes (I'm a 90's generation listener with lots of memories attached), I'm trying to enjoy the show for what it has become, not for what I remember it used to be. And when I remember that today's generation of target audience fans is enjoying the show for what it is, I remember it's all worth it.

6. What are the best and worst things about running The Odyssey Scoop?

The best part is that I've come in contact with many fans throughout the years who send e-mails of encouragement, comments, suggestions, complaints--everything. The fans are the ones who keep me going. Without their feedback and suggestions, I would have quit a long time ago. Another awesome thing about the site is seeing the traffic to the site inch its way up every year. The site becomes more well known and I've developed a relationship with several members of the Odyssey team who keep me posted on products and things going on behind-the-scenes.

On the flipside, the site has grown so large that it's often difficult to keep site features updated. Real life away from the Scoop tends to pull me away with its demands. And because the site is so large and has improved design-wise throughout the years, it's become common for me to explain via email (on hundreds of occasions) that The Odyssey Scoop is merely a fan site and isn't the Official Site. Because of that, I'm always looking for ways to improve communication on the site to avoid having to write as many of those types of emails... but not everyone reads so I guess I can't win!

Overall, the fans keep me going. I've seen the site impact a lot of people, and seeing a small snippet of my work published in the Official Guide is like a big welcomed reward for my work. Thanks, Focus!

7. Why did you decide to start The Soda Shop?

For years, I had tried to incorporate more ways for fans to interact on the website, which ended up being something I had to try to keep up with on a daily basis. By releasing a message board where fans can step up and get involved and keep the ecosystem functioning daily, it becomes a win-win situation. And I'm thankful for the people who have stepped up to help me out.

Mainly, I wanted to create a place where fans can login to a safe environment (on the Scoop) and discuss Adventures in Odyssey. Currently, other Odyssey message boards exist but are not limited to just AIO discussion (which I have been involved with as well). I wanted to create a community of fans who can discuss only AIO and immerse themselves in it alone. Oftentimes, other message boards are so large that it can be a bit overwhelming to navigate and get involved. The Soda Shop fills a void for the online fan community... and I welcome the use of other big message boards like the ToO as well as it fills a void, too.

8. Do you have any advice for AIO fans looking to start their own website?

If you don't have the commitment to keep a site going long-term, I'd say don't even bother starting a website. If you do have that commitment, be ready to provide your own unique content. You want something that other sites don't have as your enticing site feature. There have been quite a few cookie cutter fan sites over the years. If you want yours to stand out, you have to be different. Go that extra mile. Don't just start a site to provide the latest Odyssey news when that's already covered by other sites (and the Scoop).

Oh, and find ways to gain feedback from your visitors. Without the visitors, you really don't have a website. It's always good to stay in touch with them and find out what they think, because they're the ones interacting with it!

Most of all, be consistent and patient with yourself as you begin. Learn what works and what doesn't. Watch your site morph into something else as time goes by. And don't be afraid to take chances. Not everything you try will work or catch fire. It's okay to experience failure along the way. I'm still in shock at how huge the Scoop has become and how much it has changed since 2000.

9. I understand you enjoy other radio dramas. What other radio dramas do you listen to and overall which one is the best?

I like good acting, so acting dictates my radio drama preferences. I absolutely love Focus on the Family Radio Theatre for its high-quality drama and cinematic feel. Also I like Lamplighter Theatre because it's pretty high-calibur like Radio Theatre, though I consider myself far more loyal to Radio Theatre. I've heard other audio dramas including "Left Behind", "Jungle Jam" (another drama I grew up with and highly recommend), and others. By far, Radio Theatre takes the cake.

10. Have you ever considered working for AIO or FOTF?

At the moment, I'm actually working as an independent contractor work for Focus on the Family for some of their Adventures in Odyssey products. Although I'm not officially on payroll, it's been a pleasure to work with the team and handle some of their graphic design needs. I've quickly discovered that the team gives a lot of creative liberty and generally allows me to show them what I have in mind. I must say... Focus has been an awesome group of easygoing people to team up with!

If you'd like to see some of my work, be watching for Adventures in Odyssey's updated "Official Guide" this fall. I designed the eight-page color tip-in featured in the back of the book which serves as a huge selling point for the book. It's got new photo galleries and pays tribute to all the art styles of the past. Also, I recently took on design work for AIO's upcoming numbered albums. "The Grand Design" is my first album project I was responsible for, from front and back traycard covers, to CD labels, to bonus insert completion. Look for the hard copy of Album 56 this fall.

11. Have you ever been to a live show?

Alas, no, I have not. I've usually had things come up to where I am unable to attend. I would love to go and experience one myself!

12. Have you ever met any AIO actors?

Not yet. I guess you could say that's on my bucket list. It's a very deep bucket.

13. How has AIO impacted your spiritual life?

Overall, I believe AIO has shaped me a lot over the years. As cliche as this sounds, I learned a lot from Whit and I occasionally remember things he said in a former episode to remind me of how I should act. I can certainly blame AIO for my historical knowledge of many of the Bible stories. Hearing those episodes over and over really drives the stories home. I believe storytelling is, perhaps, one of the strongest influences in a person's life. It usually isn't the sermon from your pastor you remember several years afterwards. It's the sermon illustration he used as a memory tool to help you. Stories have the ability to bring doctrine from head knowledge to your heart because you see its application through a story. Now, allowing the Holy Spirit to always work in your life is a challenge in itself.

So yes, AIO has been a a strong influence in my life spiritually. AIO shouldn't be my spiritual life; it should merely aid in pointing you to Christ and encourage you to press on. I don't know here I'd be without AIO.

That was amazing, wasn't it? I'm honored to interview such an asset in the AIO fan community, and I'd like to thank Jacob, if he's reading this, for taking to time to give long, thought-out answers! Well, no AIC today, but AIC will be back with a bang next week along with yet another great interview! Who will I be interviewing next week? I'll give you a hint: He/she works with Odyssey!
     Thanks for reading!

Weekly Feature 8/5/12

Sorry this post was so long in the making, but I couldn't think of a feature because my interview isn't here yet. But just a few minutes ago, an idea popped into my head. I could do another list! (I know, I've done a lot, but I kind of like these things!) So here, in my own words, are the The Top 5 Best AIO Podcasts of all time! Also, don't forget to check out the new AIC!

The Unofficial Adventures in Odyssey Podcast       #5: The Unofficial AIO Podcast: Ah yes, the original fan podcast. The one that started it all. This is by no means the best Odyssey podcast, for various reasons including how old it is and the length of some of the podcasts, but it's still very good and it definitely deserves the #5 spot. Chris and Sarah did a good job on UAIOP and I think I speak for everyone when I say that we miss them. But this awesome podcast still couldn't beat...Audio Theatre Central
#4: Audio Theatre Central: Yes, I am aware that some fans don't consider this an Odyssey podcast because it focuses on other audio dramas like Jonathan Park, Radio Theatre, and Lamplighter Theatre, but considering it gives news and reviews of AIO, I consider it a part of the AIO podcast world. I discovered it very recently and have fallen in love with it. These three are so funny and great together, you can't help but love their podcast. And their insightful thoughts on episodes are always enjoyable to listen to, and their love of radio drama is apparent in every episode. This podcast is not perfect, but it's entertaining and a great listen. But what beat ATC?
Picture
#3: The Boredom Buster Podcast: BBP is a perfect example of an overnight sensation that became a sensation because of great episodes and a great interview! Even though it's relatively new to the podcast market, BBP still absolutely deserves a spot on this list. As I said in an earlier article,. I didn't love the first episode, but the next several episodes made up for it. I love their interview with Jave Griffin, as well as their reviews of A Member of the Family, Recollections, and all the others they've reviewed! I can't wait for them to start reviewing Album 2. If you're reading this Noah and Hallie, keep up the good work!

Picture#2: The Ceiling Fan Podcast: Hmm... I've always enjoyed TCF. It's one of the longest running AIO podcasts, and it's also the most unique. Ethan Daniels and his antics have entertained fans for years, and I hope they continue to entertain fans for years to come. I am eagerly awaiting the special podcast coming out soon, and I would call myself a 'Fan of the Fan'. However, this podcast has gotten so unrelated to Odyssey that I'm not sure I would call it an Odyssey podcast anymore. So, #1 is...

#1: The AIO Blogcast: Some of you on CC may already know that this is my favorite podcast. But I decided to say it again here. Austin and Natasha have done an absolutely SPECTACULAR job with their blog/podcast. I especially love their audio dramas. What other AIO podcast would've thought of doing that? Austin and Natasha are amazing, but there are rumors that the AIO Blogcast is ending. (Sob, sob) Even if it does end, it had a very good run, and I will enjoy it for as long as I'm an Odyssey fan.

Alright, that's um, it. Once again, sorry I posted so late. I'm not positive that I'll even post news tommorow. I know this is sad that JAAIOB is coming out of its golden age, but I warned you last post. I'm not ending this blog, but once again, expect less posts. And don't forget to check out Installment 6 of AIC! As I said before, no AIC next week as it's going on a week-long mid-story break.
     Thanks for reading!

Weekly Feature 7/29/12

Well, I know I said the first edition of Just Another AIO Podcast would be out in November or December, but the opportunity came up, and, after countless hours of recording, downloading, uploading, importing, and exporting, I finally got it up! But then I listened to it... There are several big problems with it, including the format, the audio quality, the script, and Penny's microphone. So, for all these reasons, I've labeled it as Episode 0: Alex's Flop. I'm sorry for any inconvenience, but you can still go listen to it! Yes, I know it's not top-notch quality, but, since I spent so much time working on it, I figured I might as well upload it to the blog as a flop. We'll have Episode 1 in September and we'll hopefully get all those problems fixed!
Also, after much thought, I have deleted the page Contests and Quizzes. I just simply don't like it. It's not fit to be on this blog. I'm sorry to any of you who are saddened by this decision, but I'm planning on opening a new, much better, contest page soon.
And now, finally, since that business about the podcast is settled, I will post my interview! I will be interviewing Austin Peachy and his sister Natasha today! Yes, I was expecting their answers sooner, but he (Austin) later informed me that he and his sister were on vacation. Then, just when I was considering doing yet another Top 5 list, I checked my email and there they were! The answers! And so, for your enjoyment, my interview with Austin Peachy:

1. When did you first start listening to AIO?
Austin: I can't really remember a time when I wasn't listening to it. I think I was maybe 4 when I first heard AIO. I could be wrong but I think the first episode I heard was in The Search for Whit album.
Tasha: I'm not sure. I've listened to AIO for as long as I can remember.
2. What was the inspiration for the AIO Blogcast?
Austin: It was 2 things: the Unofficial Podcast and trends. In 2008, after the Ceiling Fan made its debuet, AIO fans were starting new podcasts of their own. I wanted to be one of them. I loved listening to Chris & Sarah's podcast and wanted to someday do what they've accomplished. I originally created the first episode in November of 2008. My sister & I tried to make it like the CF, but I see now that what we did was awful. I was almost done with it and then I started moving my stuff to a new computer. After that, I found out that the program I used to edit it wouldn't work. I still had the audio, but I decided to start over from scratch. I believe it was the grace of God that we didn't release it! Now the Blogcast is a mix of different things: reviews, interviews, skits, radio dramas, and whatever else we can think of.

3. What are the best and worst parts of running an AIO blog/pod cast?
Austin: Pretty much everything is the best! Blog wise, I love writing stuff and designing logos, banners, and such for it. As for the podcast, laughing hysterically with (and at) my sister, talking with really cool people, & entertaining our listeners are all perks. The worst? Sometimes we don't feel like we have the energy to record. Also, there are times when there are technical problems that delay the recording. But all in all, it's all awesome!
Tasha: The best part of co-hosting is probably the laughs we have. I can't think of a "worst".

4. I really enjoyed Sibling Spies. How did you get the idea for it and how did you get Phil Lollar and Frank Montenegro to act in it?
Austin: We both love anything having to do with spies. We had parodied the detective genre with Austin Peachey, P.I. so we decided to do a spy spoof. It was originally called Sister Spies because we wanted our cousin, Jessica, to play in it. That fell through so we went to Sibling Spies (I was NOT going to play a sister! :) We also wanted to have a redeeming message with it. It's hard to teach something with an action show but I think it flowed pretty well with the story. As for the actors, Phil was so nice to allow us to interview him on our podcast and we love the great voices he does so we asked him to perform in our drama. Once again, he obliged us and did an awesome job! Frank is such a wonderful person and he really liked the script we wrote. We both love listening to him as Kendall Park in Jonathan Park so we asked him to be a part of our show. He really came through for us as well!
5. What are some of your favorite AIO episodes?
Austin: I like a lot of the comedic ones, like Aloha Oy!, Fast As I Can & Do or Diet. For dramatic ones, The Underground Railroad, The Jubilee Singers, Karen, & The Chosen One. These are just a few of the many hundreds of my fav eps!
Tasha: Almost all of them.

6. Who is your favorite AIO character?
Austin: Before the hiatus, it was Wooton. I loved his quirkiness and humor and heart. Now he's too silly and overused. Whit, Jared & Jack Allen are some of my favorites. I'm sure you probably know who my least favorite character is...(In case you don't know, it's Emily Jones)
Tasha: Probably Jared, Eugene, Connie, or Jason.

7. If you could have any AIO character return, who would it be and why?

Austin: Richard Maxwell for sure! When I was listening to the Green Ring Conspiracy & The Labyrinth, I was really hoping and expecting him to be a part of those shows. I really believed that Richard was the mysterious person in the plane crash. The writers have never said that he won't come back so I'm hoping that he'll return when Odyssey has another action-adventure show.
Tasha: The Washingtons and Kelly, because their story wasn't finished.
8. Are you planning any future AIO-related or non-related projects?
Austin: We are working on a new radio drama called Skye Weldon & the Crazy Cactus Caper or simply Skye Weldon. It's a Western comedy spoof. The script is finished and we almost have actors for all the roles. A few of the people performing in it are my sister & I (of course), Devon Francis, Aria Curzon, Kevin McCreary, and David Griffen. I hope to start recording this September and release it at the end of the year. It's a real fun story and I can't wait to let you guys hear it!
Thank you, Austin, for taking the time to interview! And I can't wait for the Skye Weldon drama! And, while you're here, go check out the flop podcast, the new AIC, and vote in our polls! And so, once again, thanks for reading!

Weekly Feature 7/22/12

I was expecting to do an interview today, but the person I'm interviewing hasn't responded yet, so I'll save the interview for next week, and instead, I'll do another one of my famous lists. This time, however, I'll be doing The Top 5 Best AIO Characters of All Time. Also, there's a new AIC today as well as a U.S.S. Response. All of the AIO Webster polls should be up as well. I already put the Best Website poll, but now the rest are here. Well, here's the list:

JaySmouse.png

#5 - Jay Smouse: I said he was the best new character, but that doesn't mean he's the best character. But nonetheless, Jay Smouse is a delight to listen to. He's complex, but not like Emily where you can't get his true perosnality. He's a bit of a bully, but he has a good side. I love those types of characters. And he's funny, and he has chemistry with other characters, and he's played by one of the best actors currently on AIO! For all these reasons and more, Jay deserves #5. But he's not as good as...

Alex.png

#4 - Alex Jefferson: Some of you may think that I'm betraying myself by not putting me as #1. But the reason that Alex is my blog name is not because he's the best character, but because he's the most like me. But Alex still definetely deserves a spot on this list. I love him. He's funny, inventive, curious, fascinating, and he's good with computers. And, as Pound Foolish said: "To top it all off, Liz has a crush on him!" That's reason enough to give him #4. But who's better?...

Tomriley.png

#3 - Tom Riley: Oh, Tom, Tom, Tom! Why did you have to leave Odyssey? Why did Walker Edminston have to die? It was possibly the greatest loss that AIO ever had, maybe even greater than Hal Smith. Tom was such a great character, played by such a great actor, that he absolutely HAS to be on this list! His farmer twang and amusing, thoughtful personality make him a treasure for our hearts. And he's the only one who can tell Whit that he's wrong. (Ex: The Mortal Coil, The W.E.) I love Tom, and sometimes he's overlooked. But the character who's better is...

Bryandern.jpg

#2 - Cryin Bryan Dern: Was that a bit of a surprise? I've said in a couple interviews that Dern is my favorite character. But just because he's my favorite doesn't mean he's the best. I love his edgy remarks, his comedic blastphomy, and his seemingly heartless attitude, but, ultimately, he's not quite the best. Dern is very, very close, and I absolutely love him in every single episode that he's in, but the best needs to be reserved for another. That person is...

#1 - Connie Kendall: I almost wanted to give the #1 spot to Whit. But when I thought about it, although Whit is a very good character, Connie is better. She's the true eternal teenager, and we can relate to her more than we can relate to Whit. If she left the show, I would cry. I would burst into tears. That's how attached to her I am. I think everyone else feels the same way. Or at least I hope they do. Connie is an amazing character, and Katie Leigh is the best actress AIO has ever had. That may seem like a bold statement, but when you think about it, it's true. Connie is the best character that AIO has, and she should be appreciated. Whit gets 6th.

Did you like the feature? Well, I'll have another one in a week! It'll probably be an interivew, but I'm not postitive. And don't forget to check out the new AIC and the new U.S.S. Response. And vote in the AIO Websters right here with our new polls!
     Thanks for reading!

Weekly Feature 7/8/12

Alright. The new AIC is up. Check it out on the Adventures in Connellsville page. And now, for this week's feature The Top 5 Worst AIO Albums of All Time!

#5: Album 30: Through Thick and Thin - Hmm... It's not much of a surprise that this one got in the list. It's not that there are any particularly horrific episodes, it's just that all the episodes (with the exception of Tornado!) are boring mediocre, and stories that we've already heard. And for that, Through Thick and Thin deserves #5. But it's not quite as bad as...

#4: Album 34: In Your Wildest Dreams - Oh yeah... Everyone knows this one, and everyone hates it. Personally I don't hate a lot of episodes on here, but because of the additions of Sunset Bowlwater, A Long Way Home, A Lyin Tale, Bethany's Flood, Idol Minds, A Matter of Manners, and The Seven Deadly Dwarves, this turned into a bad album. If they had just had episodes like No Boundaries, I Slap Floor, Mandy's Debut, and Passages throughout the album, it would have been a lot stronger. But because of those, it didn't lose to...

#3: Album 4: FUN-Damentels - You wouldn't think of putting this one on your Top 5 Worst AIO Albums of All Time list, but I decided to anyway, for the sole reason that not a single episode on here was truly good. Most of the episodes were below average, and a few of them were pretty bad. A couple episodes (By Faith, Noah, Let This Mind Be In You) were average, but, overall, the album was truly disappointing. But what's worse is...

#2: Album 1: The Adventure Begins - Aah! I hate doing this. Album 1, as I said in my article 'The Early Classics' represents classic Odyssey. But classics aren't always the best episodes. True, the characters are great in here, but the plots for some of the episodes are just plain awful! (Life of the Party, The Day After Christmas, Nothing to Fear, A Change of Hart) Literally, the only episode that I truly enjoyed was Recollections. The rest of them (even Connie Comes to Town) were all just plain bad. Also, (This was mentioned on BBP as well) the kids say 'stupid' and 'shut up' more than they have to. Odyssey was never like that. But still, this horrifically classic album didn't beat #1. #1 is...

#1: Album 52: Cause and Effect - Yes. A very recent, post-hiatus album. I'm sorry, Odyssey. But this album was really, really bad. Even The Mystery of the Clock-tower had plot holes. And the characters! We're just warming up to these new kids! You shouldn't make them annoying. In episodes like Wooton's Broken Pencil Show, Stage Fright, Fast As I Can, Opposite Day, An Agreeable Nanny, The Malted Milk-ball Falcon, and Grandma's Christmas Visit the characters got on my nerves a lot. I didn't want to keep listening. And even the plots for several episodes were used, boring, or just plain bad. (Wooton's Broken Pencil Show, Opposite Day, Square One, An Agreeable Nanny, Grandma's Christmas Visit) This album absolutely disappointed me, and I thought Odyssey would go down the tubes.

Sorry if that horrible critique of the best radio drama ever was too horrible for you. I thought, since I had made a best list, I should make a worst list. But if you did like the feature, comment! And be sure to check out Installment 2 of Adventures in Connellville! Thanks for reading!

Weekly Feature 7/1/12

Yes! Finally! The big surprises are up! Check out my Adventures in Connellsville and Contests and Quizzes pages to learn more! For this feature, I interviewed Wooton Basset from The Unofficial AIO Blog and The Old Judge from Twists and Turns.

Alex Jefferson: When did you first start listening to AIO?

Wooton Basset: I started listening to AIO when I was around 4 years old. The first time I heard it was on the radio. My dad and I would listen to it every Saturday morning. I got my first Album a few years ago and ever since then I've been collecting them. I now have over 60 Odyssey items (albums, books, etc).

The Old Judge: December 26, 2009. My grandmother got me and my family Albums 1-4. I wasn't sure that I'd like them, but we listened to them the day after Christmas, and we got immediately hooked.

AJ: What is your favorite AIO episode?

WB: Well, I've had many favorite AIO episodes. Too many to count. But then a week ago I got Album 55 and I listened to the Labyrinth and it was just amazing. It is definitely my favorite. I can't stop listening to it.

TOJ: Oh, that's hard. I'd say The Inspiration Station, The Jubilee Singers, The Highest Stakes, Rescue From Manatugo Point and Operation: Digout, East Winds, Raining, and Something Significant, to name just a few.

AJ: You created the AIO newsletter that was shown of the Official Site. How did you get the idea to create a newsletter and how exactly did you send it to the site?

WB: One day I just got the idea for an AIO newsletter. It took me around 2 days to figure out what I should put in my newsletter. After I finished it I found Jesse Florea's email address in my sister's clubhouse jr. magazine and sent it to him. He emailed me back telling me that he had shown the newsletter to Nathan Hoobler, and Nathan said, “The e-newsletter is pretty fun. Maybe we should feature it on our blog. I don’t believe I’ve interacted with Noah before. You might ask if we can feature the newsletter on the blog.” So that’s how it got on The Official blog.

AJ: This may seem like an odd question, but I just have to ask: How did you find my blog? It appears that you were the first person to find it, and I'm not sure if it was even on Google.

TOJ: Through Wooton's Imagination Station page. He knows more Odyssey fan sites than I did, so I found your site on there. Needless to say, I fell in love with your site. You do an amazing job!!!

AJ: Why did you decide to start an AIO website?

WB: Our friends had a blog (not an AIO one) and it gave me the idea for a blog. I started out making a lego blog (http://epiclego.blogspot.com/
) and then made an AIO one. I made a few posts on my AIO one then became inactive. Just recently I got it going again.

TOJ: Well, I thought it would be nice to have a place to voice my opinions. Another main reason is that I was searching AIO fan sites one day and saw that so many fan sites had either stopped, or had slowed down almost completely on their posts. I thought that it would be nice to have a website that would actually be updated frequently that people could always go to read something new.

AJ: What are the best and worst things about having a website?

WB: I love pretty much everything about putting together a website. It's really fun. Probably the best thing is the fan feedback. They email me or comment on my blog saying that they love it. The worst thing is when there is nothing to post about on my blog.

TOJ: Well, the best thing about is you get to put your opinions in one place and see what other people think. The bad points are probably thinking of new things such as features.

Thank  you, The Old Judge and Wooton Basset for making time for the interview! Post a comment about the feature or the big surprise! And don’t forget to check out Adventures in Connellsville and Contests and Quizzes! Thanks for reading!

Weekly Feature 6/24/12

For this Feature,  I will be listing what, in my opinion, are the Top 5 Best AIO Albums of all time. And, you'll finally find out when the big surprise will come...

#5: The Deep End - Yes, you read right. A post-hiatus album actually got into this list! Can you believe it? I know how much everyone hates post-hiatus albums, and how Emily is so annoying, and how they brought in new writers, and how Andre Stoijka doesn't sound like Whit at all. There was a time when I agreed with you. But now, having listened to Album 55, I can appreciate Album 54, 53, 52, and 51 a lot more. And from the exciting espionage and intrigue of The Labyrinth, to the historical-driven epic Sergent York, and all the way to the comedic hilarity of the return of a loved character, Something Old, Something New, Album 55 truly deserves #5 Album of all time. It is hands down the best post-hiatus album. But it's still not as good as...

#4: Battle Lines - Yes!, you're thinking. He put an epic action-adventure album in the Top 5! But it's really not because of the dramatic explosions and creepy phone calls that this album got in this list. It's because of the excitement, intrigue, and emotion of the epic finale of the Novacom Saga. They could have left out the tower explosion, (though it was vital to the plot) and I would have still put it on this list. Because, you see, it's not action or intensity that always counts. (Though I love it when Odyssey gets a little intense!) It's heart. But though Battle Lines is good, the album that beat it is...

#3: Other Times, Other Places - I love the early days of Odyssey. Albums 1 - 15, The Gold Audio Series, are some of the best albums. And honestly, Other Times, Other Places represents the best of The Gold Audio Series. It has slice-of-life, action-adventure, biblical episodes, and strange dreams by Jimmy Barcaly. All of the episodes are good, and some of them are really, really great. And so, Album 10 deserves a spot as #3. But what deserves #2? Could it be...

#2: Darkness Before Dawn - Oh, yes. You heard right. Against all odds, Darkness Before Dawn is not named #1, and you'll never visit this website again and leave a bunch of comments asking what my problem is. You don't even need a reason for Darkness Before Dawn getting #2. It's just a terrific album. And to make it interesting, they even threw in a slice-of-life show, A Little Credit, Please! Need I say more? And what's #1, you ask? #1 is...

#1: The Best Small Town - I know, I know, some people don't like this album. And this is just my opinion. I think that The Best Small Town has something that no other albums have. It has episodes that really flow together, if you know what I mean. If one episode in The Best Small Town were left out, none of the others would make sense. But, that also applies to Darkness Before Dawn and even Battle Lines. So why didn't Darkness Before Dawn get first? Because, Darkness Before Dawn may have one normal show, but it's not an especially terrific one. Don't get me wrong, I really like A Little Credit, Please, it's just that Album 50 has good old, classic Odyssey. Darkness Before Dawn is hands down the best action-adventure album, but The Best Small Town is the best album. After all, it's a celebration of everyone's favorite town. There's something nostalgic about the last scene in The Forgotten Deed. And while no one else may agree with me, you can't deny that this is a really great album. You just can't deny it.

Thank you. Are you surprised? Write a comment saying you are. But if you knew all along what #1 was, drop a comment about that too.
And didn't I mention something about the big surprise? Oh, yes. The big surprise is coming in three parts, the first two tiny, the last one big. You already got the first part: the new logo. The next part of this mysterious addition, which is bigger than the logo but not as big as the last surprise, will come on Wednesday. And finally, the biggest part of this renovation will come on Sunday. Are you excited yet?
When I post next feature, the surprise will be up. By the way, I'm doing an interview next feature. I'm not telling you who I'm interviewing, so you'll just have to wait till Sunday. My, Sunday is going to be a big day for this blog! Thanks for reading!
